IN AN EMERGENCY: THUNDERSTORM
In the Event There is a Severe Thunderstorm or Tornado that is Imminent
in Your Area
- Move to an inner hallway or smaller inner room without windows.
- Do not take cover in a room with an exterior wall or windows.
- Take cover under a sturdy piece of furniture.
- Use any available cushion material to protect yourself.
- Stay in the refuge area or under cover until the "all clear" has been communicated.
After the Storm has Passed
- Help those who may need assistance.
- Be aware of damaged gas lines.
- Report downed utility wires.
- Get the latest emergency information.
If Giving Aid to a Victim of Lighting
- Breathing - if breathing has stopped, begin mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
- Heartbeat - if the heart has stopped, administer CPR.
- Pulse - if the victim has a pulse and is breathing, look for other possible injuries. Check for burns where the lightning entered and left the body. Also be alert for nervous system damage, broken bones, and loss of hearing and eyesight.
